Three SSAC Softball Teams Still Alive In NAIA Opening Round Action

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Three SSAC teams are still fighting after two days of action at the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round.
 
Middle Georgia State fought back for a pair of victories, including a 1-0 nine-inning victory, while UT Southern won its only game of the day to stay alive. Games in Mobile’s bracket were pushed to Wednesday due to weather.

  • The Knights took control by scoring in each of the final four turns at bat, including a four-run fifth
  • Emily Proctor tossed six innings of five-hit, one-run ball, while Mel Bullock homered and drove in three
 
#3 Middle Georgia State def. #4 Embry-Riddle 1-0
  • Proctor again starred in a pitchers’ duel with nine innings of three-hit, eight-strikeout shutout ball
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Alexis Cosgrove started with a single, and after moving around to third, Gabbie Haas delivered a sac fly
 
#5 UT Southern def. #3 British Columbia 4-1
  • Stella Gilbreath got the win with four innings of five-hit, shutout relief
  • UTS did the bulk of the scoring with a three-run third inning, capped by Marie Bodily’s RBI hit
 
#3 William Carey def. #4 Houston-Victoria 7-1
  • The Crusaders pounded out 12 hits, with Julia Shaw driving in four and Albanie Fussell delivering three hits
  • Seven different Crusaders recorded a hit
 
#5 Morningside def. #3 William Carey 8-4
  • Morningside plated four runs in both the third and fourth innings to take control, totaling nine hits between the two frames
  • Liz Cross led the Crusaders with a two-hit day
 
#3 Evangel def. #4 Thomas 7-0
  • Evangel played four runs in the first and never looked back
  • Thomas got two-hit days from Ansley Eason and Sierra Ussery
