Faulkner Punches Ticket To NAIA Men's Basketball Round of 16

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – No. 12 seed Faulkner knocked off No. 4 seed Columbia 75-67 to advance to the NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship Round of 16 in Kansas City, Mo. 
The remainder of the men’s basketball tournament takes place March 19-24. 
 
Other SSAC teams competing in Second Round action Saturday saw their seasons come to an end. 
 
Men
#12 Faulkner def. #4 Columbia 75-67
  • Faulkner’s Gideon Harris led with 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting from 3-point range, while Tanner Vogel finished with 13 points and 15 rebounds
  • The Eagles went 22-of-30 from the FT line, compared to 10-of-20 for the Cougars
  • Faulkner led for 97% of the game, with Columbia’s last lead being 5-4
 
#4 Cumberlands def. #5 William Carey 95-68
  • The Crusaders got 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from distance from Javeon Gordon and 15 points from Malik Franklin
  • Cumberlands out-shot WCU 49% to 30% from the field and dominated the glass with a 57-21 advantage
 
#2 Indiana Wesleyan def. #10 Dalton State 89-70
  • Qualen Pettus led the Roadrunners with 22 points, while Omarion Smith added 14 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks
  • Indiana Wesleyan out-shot Dalton State 52% to 39% from the field, including hitting 7-of-13 from 3-point range
 
Women
#5 Georgetown def. #4 Loyola 81-72 
  • Deniya Thornton led the Wolf Pack with 22 points, 12 rebounds and three steals, while Caitlin Travis added 16 points
  • Georgetown led for 32:26 and committed only six turnovers
  • Loyola rallied to tie the game at 69-69 with 2:37 to play on a bucket from Alissa O’Dell, but Georgetown held Loyola without a point over the next 2:29 to pull away
 
#6 Spring Arbor def. #3 UT Southern 80-67
  • Silkiari Vazquez-Troche finished with 19 points for UT Southern and Mycala Carney added 15 points
  • The Cougars out-shot the Firehawks 44% to 23% from 3-point range and knocked down 21-of-26 from the FT line
