DECATUR, Ala. – No. 10 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) defeated No. 2 Dalton State (Ga.) 1-0 (2OT) in the quarterfinals of the 2022 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship.
The Roadrunners finish the year with a 16-2-3 mark.
GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS
· Dalton State was the aggressor out of the gate, generated three shots in the first five minutes of play, with the third being saved by LWC keeper Pablo Costa
· The first quality chance for the Blue Raiders came in the 16th minute as right back defender Anouar Adam whipped the ball across the face of a goal but the diving Jaland Larmond’s header flew high
· As the first half ticked down, the frenetic pace died away with only four shots taken over the last 30 minutes of play, three of which were loaded up by Lindsey Wilson
· Between the 45th and 60th minutes of action, only one shot and one corner kick was taken – both by the Blue Raiders’ Alexander Koziolek
· The Roadrunners were off balance in the second half, generating their first shot attempt at 65:22 which went wide left off the foot of Leonardo Seixas
· One minute later, Seixas dialed up another attempt, this time saved by LWC keeper Pablo Costa
· The prodding style of the Blue Raiders payed off as they slowly worked the ball up the pitch with 30 minutes remaining
· Monwabisi Mngqibisa received the ball, put the defender in a turn cycle, and slipped it to Sadam Masereka who’s attempt was saved by DSC’s Michael Barrueta
· As the five minute warning was said over the loudspeaker, Cristiano Catarino launched an ambitious attempt that trailed wide of the goal
· As the counter attack built, Masereka tried to catch Barrueta off guard with a shot from 25 yards out, but the save was recorded
· At the end of 90 minutes, the teams regrouped before they embarked on a pair of 10 minute overtime periods which was the first Final Site match to not be determined in regulation
· With the overtime rules changed for regular season contests, only LWC had played extra time in 2022 as their Second Round match was decided in a shootout after two overtimes
· A misplayed ball by the Dalton State backline brought Barrueta way outside the box and even though he deflected the ball, the speed of Masereka allowed him to recover and score the game winner in the 94th minute
· In the second overtime, the Roadrunners were pushing high trying to find the equalizer, but the LWC defense was able to clear away any threats
· DSC was previously shutout only once this year, a non-conference match against Williams Baptist (Ark.)
